Disco Ritual

Disco Ritual is Live Art Society’s main production in the year 2015. Disco Ritual is an immersive ritual performance constructed for a temporary community. It combines live art, ritual analysis, and multisensory and bodily techniques to create a space of darkness, volume and quantity.
Disco Ritual is a put together by a Helsinki-based group of nine performance-makers, whose presence and actions enable and adjust the shared space of the ritual.

Disco Ritual premieres in Kiasma Theatre at URB 15 Festival of Urban Art , August 8th – 9th 2015.

Disco Ritual is darkness, sound and movement.

The Ritual has three parts.
Entry, Darkness, and Ending.

The Ritual has three rules.

Take care of yourself
Take care of others
Take care of the Ritual

If you feel discomfort, stop the Ritual.
If the darkness is broken, the Ritual will be discontinued.

Aristotle writes: ”Feelings like pity, fear and excitement affect strongly on the souls of some, but those feelings can be found in all of us. Some are very open to these kind of mental movements. During the performance of sacred melodies and the use of musical keys that excite the soul, we can find them in such a mental state as if they would have been given a medicine and would have been cleansed. All of them experience some form of cleansing and relief, joined with pleasure.”

Working group: Eric Barco, Veli-Pekka Majava, Tatu Nenonen, Joel Neves, Ilmari Paananen, Justus Pienmunne, Sofia Simola, Lotta Suomi, Sanna Uuttu, Tuomas Vaahtoluoto

(Ilmari brings a light to the middle of the room. Everyone gathers in one circle.)

LOTTA

”This is Discoritual.”

ERIC

“Discoritual is medicine and purification.”

TUOMAS

”Aristotle writes: ”Feelings like pity, fear and excitement affect strongly on the souls of some, but those feelings can be found in all of us. Some are very open to these kind of mental movements. During the performance of sacred melodies and the use of musical keys that excite the soul, we can find them in such a mental state as if they would have been given a medicine and would have been cleansed. All of them experience some form of cleansing and relief, joined with pleasure.”

ERIC

”As if we would have been given a medicine and cleansed ourselves.”

JOEL

”In the Ritual, our goal is to create a safe community without anyone overseeing us.”

(Pause.)

ILMARI

”The Ritual is divided into three parts: Entry, Darkness and Ending”

TUOMAS

”We are now in the first part of the Ritual, the Entry. We will now go through the rules and the structure of the Ritual.  Discoritual does not have a story. During the Entry, the light will slowly fade and the volume of the sound rises. It will still be possible to leave. By the end of the Entry, it will be perfectly dark. At that point we will transition to the next part, the Darkness.”

ERIC

”The Darkness lasts for 90 minutes, during which sound will be played with no interruptions. We will be here, together. We may dance, or just follow our intuition. You are allowed to test your own limits as long as you respect everyone else’s ability to do the same.

In the Darkness there are no performers. Everyone of us will take part in the Ritual as themselves and as a part of the community formed. We are the ritual. At the end of the Darkness, we will hear a rising sound, after which the Darkness will end with a bright light.”

LOTTA

”After the Darkness, we will offer cool water, maybe talk or rest together. This is the last part of the ritual. It will last for 15 minutes.”

ILMARI

”There are three rules to Discoritual.”

JUSTUS

”Take care of yourself

Take care of others

Take care of the Ritual

If you feel discomfort, stop the Ritual

If the darkness is broken, the Ritual will be discontinued.”

ILMARI

”Any one of you may stop the Ritual if you feel that the rules are broken.”

TATU

”If a door is opened, the Ritual will end. The doors are marked with these floortactiles. Jani-Matti and Mateus will stand by the door and will help you open it. You will recognize them from these signs.

If the Ritual is discontinued, the light will return and the volume will go down. After this we will form a circle and decide how we will continue.”

SOFIA

”Does anyone have any questions? Anything? We have now told you everything that we can. Take care of yourself. Take care of others. Take care of the Ritual. Remember that you may end the Ritual just by opening the door. The first part of the Ritual will end soon. It is still possible to leave if you don’t want to take part in the Ritual.”

(Sofia steps aside from the circle)

JOEL

”If you want to leave, please follow me. I will help you with your belongings.”

(Joel walks across the circle and opens the door. Pause. Those who wish to leave, leave.)

TUOMAS

”We are waiting that outside everything is ready and Joel returns to the circle.”

(Joel closes the door and returns to the circle. Sofia steps back in the circle. Circle is full again and everyone sees one another.)

LOTTA

”Today we will the create the Discoritual. Let us now introduce ourselves by telling our names.”

(Everyone will tell their names)

JOEL

”In the Ritual, our goal is to create a safe community without anyone overseeing us.”

ILMARI

”The Darkness begins soon.”

ERIC

”We have now explained you the structure of the Ritual. Jani-Matti and Mateus moves to the door. Tatu will begin fading in the sound and fading out the light. Before the Darkness Ilmari will turn off the light and remove it from the space. The light will fade slowly. This will take some minutes, during which the Darkness will fall. For a moment, we can still see one another.”

LOTTA

”You can trust this darkness. It has been built carefully.”

(The light fades.)

LOTTA

”The Darkness begins now.”

(Ilmari walks to the centre of the circle, picks up the lamp, walks off. The Darkness.)
